Rhetorical Analysis Of Orange Is The New Black ( Oitnb )...

Drawing on a rhetorical critical analysis to studying technology, this paper outlines a proposal to research how Orange Is The New Black (OITNB) is affecting the women of the multiple races portrayed in the show. I will also discuss if binge watching can institute cultivation and affect a viewer’s perceptions as a result of constant content exposure. Specifically, I will conduct a rhetorical analysis of symbolic artifacts including, language, images, and gestures displayed in OITNB. To supplement the rhetorical critical analysis, I will conduct in-depth interviews with female OITNB viewers, who are from each race depicted in the show, in which I will ask them questions to solicit their perspectives of the female racial representations presented in the show. Before I conduct a rhetorical analysis I will have to define what constitutes as stereotypical or negative racial representation and evaluate the content of OITNB accordingly. To keep track of gender and racial representations in OITNB I will develop codes for designated behaviors and assign them specific categories. The rhetorical analysis will provide information to structure the interview questions as well as identify any existing stereotypical racial representations. From the interviews, I will collect data on the amount of time they have spent watching the content and their perceptions of female racial representations in the show and in reality. From the theoretical perspective of cultivation, I will examine how

Qantas Company Market Analysis Essay Example

Essays on Qantas Company: Market Analysis Essay The paper "Qantas Company: Market Analysis" is a wonderful example of a business essay.  The airline industry is a sensitive industry in the transport service. This is because there are various individuals ranging from business persons to professionals who seek to use air transport in the course of their busy schedules while attempting to meet their goals in their businesses. Moreover, there are many airline industries that can offer services. The cutting edge has to be achieved in the type of internal services that the company provides to its clients. The in-flight menu forms part of the services that can guarantee an airline company the cutting edge over the other companies.Nature of the market The trend in the market indicates selection of flight services with respect to the in-flight menus that are onboard. Selection of the type of meals is influenced by demography. The demographic profile such as gender, age and country of origin influence the choice of food by the passengers. Subsequently, it influences the satisfaction that the passengers will get from the company. In coming up with the new in-flight meals to heart foundation tick of approval meals, Qantas targets to effectively serve its specialist markets in Q catering and Qantas Holidays (InvestSmart, 2013). Therefore, individuals who are flying out on holiday will be the ultimate target since they have to get a meal that will make them feel in the holiday mood already.Suppliers Various suppliers will come into play. They will be the suppliers of in-flight catering services such as Airport-Suppliers and OFT. Outsourcing of the service guarantees proper service since the competition to provide the service demands quality (Zahari et a,l, 2011). In a research conducted by Zahari et al (2011), passengers stated that delicious meals onboard the flight was irresistible by them. This indicates that in the near future, foods shall be the main consideration to the airline company to be selected after the tim e factor.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Competition Lundren and Wall (2013) state that airline carriers are looking to dish up foodie menus that will demonstrate the golden age of travelling by air. They are therefore using food as a means of reaching out to more clients and getting more revenue. Qantas faces stiff competition from Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue. The companies strive to provide in-flight menus as part of the flight service package. In an article by Maina (2012), it was stated that it is the small rations of food that are served in plastic cutlery and tubs that have become handy to most airline passengers. It is the duty of in-flight catering firms to provide the best of menus to the tired airborne passengers.PEST Analysis of the marketPoliticalThe political environment in Australia is stable and this will facilitate the success of any business. The regulations set do not pose major any threats to the business. In fact, it allows for competitiveness in the market and this means tha t outsourcing of the in-flight menu services will not face any political challenge.EconomicAustralia is a big and rich player in the region. The people in the country have the ability to travel often and this implies that they will promote the airline industry through their many trips on holidays and through their consideration of what is the best offer of the in-flight menu.Social (potential customers)In Australia, the social profile of people is broad because there are many migrants as well as the locals. Together with their holidaying habits, the people will contribute to the Qantas Company when on their trips. Further, they have a nice habit of selecting the types of meals they want. For instance, seafood is widely liked by Australians. They also like foods like pasta, pastries, vegetables and fresh fruits. Since Qantas provides full service on local and global air transport, it will also consider the needs of other non-local travellers. Most travellers are professionals and thi s implies that the foods shall be varied. Even so, foods like Mediterranean cuisine, Thai curries and fried rice shall dominate the menu so as to let the passengers explore the meals.   TechnologicalTechnology will play a part in the preparation of the meal. Advanced food technology shall be used in ensuring safe and quality meals for passengers.   ReferencesInvestSmart, 2013, Qantas Airways Limited (QAN), Accessed on September 1, 2013, from:.Lundren, K. Grief Paper Free Essays

TBaggett-Grief paper-unit8 Tina Baggett Kaplan University TBaggett-Grief paper-unit8 According to Hockenberry Wilson (Hockenberry Wilson, 2007, p. 139), there are four phases of grief and mourning. The first phase of grief is disbelief or denial. We will write a custom essay sample on Grief Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now There is a feeling of dullness or having an â€Å"out of body† experience. At this time, one goes into the second phase. The second phase is overwhelming need to be with the deceased. These phases can last minutes or days. The third phase is a feeling of hopelessness and scattered thought processes. The person in this phase is usually despondent and may retreat to a void within oneself. Sometimes they feel in this phase that life has no meaning without the deceased at their side. The last phase is â€Å"reorganization, when the person begins to again find meaning in life, integrating the loss of the loved one into a renewed sense of normalcy† (Wacker-Guido, 2010, p. 139). There are four kinds of grief. The first type of grief is disenfranchised grief; this is the result of a loss for which they do not have a socially recognized right, role or capacity to grieve. These socially ambiguous losses cannot be openly mourned, or socially supported. Essentially, this is grief that is restricted by â€Å"grieving rules† ascribed by the culture and society. The bereaved may not publicly grieve because, somehow, some element or elements of the loss prevent a public recognition. Disenfranchised grief occurs in three primary ways. The first way is the relationship is not socially recognized. The relationship is not based on recognizable kin ties (the death of a friend), or socially sanctioned, (a partner in a gay or lesbian relationship), the relationship exists primarily in the past (ex-spouse). The second way is that the loss is not socially recognized or is hidden from others. Not socially recognized losses include perinatal losses. Hidden losses include abortion, the loss of pet, and losses that result from causes other than death. The third way that disenfranchised grief may occur is where circumstances of the death or deaths that contribute to stigma and negative judgment by others. Forms of death that would fall into this category include suicide, abortion, death as a result of AIDS, and fatal drug overdose are all examples of this type of disenfranchisement. The second kind of grief is anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief can be described as the normal mourning that occurs when a patient or family is expecting a death. Anticipatory grief has many of the same symptoms as those experienced after a death has occurred. It includes all of the thinking, feeling, cultural, and social reactions to an expected death that are felt by the patient and family. Anticipatory grief includes  depression, extreme concern for the dying person, preparing for the death, and adjusting to changes caused by the death. Anticipatory grief gives the family and friends more time to slowly get used to the reality of the loss. People are able to complete unfinished business with the dying person for example, saying â€Å"good-bye,† â€Å"I love you,† or â€Å"I forgive you†. Anticipatory grief may not always occur. Anticipatory grief does not mean that before the death, a person feels the same kind of grief as the grief felt after a death. There is not a set amount of grief that a person will feel. The grief experienced before a death does not make the grief after the death last a shorter amount of time. Some people believe that anticipatory grief is rare. To accept a loved one’s death while he or she is still alive may leave the mourner feeling that the dying patient has been abandoned. Expecting the loss often makes the attachment to the dying person stronger. The third kind of grief is complicated grief. â€Å"Complicated grief is an intense and long-lasting form of grief that takes over a person’s life. It is natural to experience acute grief after someone close dies, but complicated grief is different. Complicated grief is a form of grief that takes hold of a person’s mind and won’t let go. People with complicated grief often say that they feel â€Å"stuck. †Ã‚  (â€Å"Complicated Grief†). The term complicated sometimes is referred to a factor that grief interferes with the natural healing process. There are many people that get stuck in this type of grief. The last type of grief includes the normal type of grief. In this normal type, the four phases of the grief process will occur. Whenever someone in your life passes away no one knows how you will respond or what kind of grief you will go through. This is how it happened with my friend Linda. When you get that phone call and someone at the end of the phone gives you news that you wish that you never had to hear is the most devastating event that can occur in one’s lifetime. My friend Linda received this phone call fifteen years ago. The caller let her know that her son was involved in a single shooting accident and that he was found dead with a note next to him. After talking with Linda, I cannot imagine the pain that she had to go through. Knowing you lost someone in your family is one thing but losing a child that you brought into the world is another thing. Linda went through all stages of grief. She stated that when she went through the third stage she stayed in the third phase a long time. She stated that she cooked and cleaned and was in a â€Å"fog†. She said she cooked for days and threw food away. She did not know what to do with her time. Being a nurse, I knew she needed to be able to talk and vent. She stated she could not talk to anyone because in her religion it was known to be a sin to have committed suicide and therefore she dealt with this guilt on her own. After reviewing what disenfranchised grief is, I recognized my friend Linda. I also recognized that because of the stigma of suicide this was a barrier in the normal process of grieving. There may be different reasons for a barrier to occur. My dad went through a different kind of grieving process. My mom passed away after being on hospice for many months. The hospice nurse explained to all of us the stages of death and the stages of the grieving process. This led us through a positive grieving process. He went through the anticipatory grieving process. He planned the funeral; he said his goodbyes before she passed. He grieved for months. After my mom did pass away he grieved all over again. I grieved before my mom passed away and when she finally did pass, it took me seven months for the grieving to start again after she actually passed away. I felt guilty when I did not grieve when she died. I went into automation mode. I made the plans, I made sure the family was ok and I did not even shed a tear. This was my barrier. I needed to be the nurse and make sure everyone else was cared for. Seven months later, I had waterfalls of tears, and I went into a deep depression. This was a negative coping mechanism. The depression had to be treated clinically and therefore showed negative coping. It is strange how different people grieve. It is also strange knowing the right way to grieve and the wrong way to grieve. This scenario goes to show that no matter what your knowledge base is, it is how you react when it happens to you, or how you respond as a nurse to someone else. References Doka, K. (2012). Thesis Statement Is Mozarts Requiem Mass Essay Example For Students

Thesis Statement Is Mozarts Requiem Mass Essay The Requiem is the most performed and studied pieces of music history and the story of the mysterious commission of Mozart Requiem is a well known. The Requiem Mass reveals not only a mastery of musical imagery, but also the composers own view about life and death. Content Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born January 27, 1756 in Salisbury to Leopold and Maria Anna Mozart. He was the seventh and last child to be born and only the second to survive, along With his older sister Manner. At an early age, Mozart had a gift with music. He began to compose at age five and in 1761 made his first public appearance with his father. Leopold was proud of his sons many gifts and paraded Mozart around Europe to perform at concert halls and courts. Even though throughout his childhood Mozart was often bed ridden with illness, he would compose and return to touring once his illnesses let up. In fact, Mozart was always composing, no matter where he went. One account from Mozart hairdresser states that Mozart carried a small notebook with him to jot down ideas and notes as they came and went. To better understand the events of 1791 it is important to understand other critical events in Mozart life. On August 4, 1782, at the age of 26, Mozart married Constance Weber at SST. Stephens Cathedral in Vienna. Nine years later, Mozart died in 1791 at the age of 35. Before his death, Constance gave birth to their sixth child Franz Xavier Wolfgang. Franz, however, was only the second hill, along with Karl, to survive; four died in infancy. After Mozart death, Constance married George Nisei. Constance died in 1842. Unfortunately, Karl and Franz both died before having legitimate children to carry on the Mozart family name. Various sources recall the events in 1791 leading up to Mozart death. The Story begins With Count Franz von Wallets, Who commissioned a requiem mass for his wife Anna who died at age 20 at Chutzpahs Castle in Austria on February 14, 1791. Wallets often composed his own work, and he and his wife performed concerts for the people of his manor. Wallets was known for using ghost rites. He would commission works from famous composers and pay a good sum for them. He would take the complete work back to Chutzpah, recopy all the parts by hand and pass them off as his own compositions. In various accounts the people Of Walleyes house claimed that they were always aware that Wallets was deceiving them, but played along for enjoyment. Annas death would require a large scale, glorious requiem mass. Naturally, Mozart help would be needed; he would be the ghostwriter. In the early summer of 1791 a gray messenger appeared at the Mozart apartment in Vienna With an unsigned letter. The author of the letter stated that a requiem mass was to be composed for a man who would remain anonymous, but who would like a loved one to be remembered. The letter asked Mozart to respond and state a desired sum in writing; the messenger would respond shortly. After discussing the matter with his wife Constance, he decided to accept the offer. The messenger returned with the amount Mozart requested, a sum to around 30 ducats, and promised more money when the requiem was completed, The commissioner did not request any specific tort the mass should take, and this became Mozart decision while composing. He chose the traditional form with the Dies Eire (Latin hymn sung in s Mass for the dead) as the Sequence. The writing of the Requiem was interrupted when Mozart traveled to Prague after the birth of his second son Franz Xavier Wolfgang Mozart. .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .postImageUrl , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:hover , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:visited , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:active { border:0!important; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:active , .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785 .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u263cefd5299b1e7633973c5d3242f785:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Link Between Heart Disease and Cancer Explorat EssayIn Prague he performed his latest Opera La Clemency did Toto (written for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II), After returning in late September, Mozart continued writing. He had laid out ideas in a form called participle; which are his brief sketches of music (referred to by Constance as Title scraps of paper). In late September Mozart famous opera Die Kafuffle ¶tee was completed and a success. Its completion gave Mozart the opportunity to work solely on the Requiem. Mozart worked night and day, focusing all Of his energy on the Requiem. As the composing continued, Mozart grew more and more emotionally attached t o the piece. Soon he became delusional and started to believe that he was writing this death mass for himself. In 1829, Constance recalled her husbands words. M l know must die, he exclaimed six months before he actually did. Toothsome has given me aqua tiffany and has calculated the precise time of my death, for which they have ordered a Requiem, it is for myself am rating this, On January 7, 1792 the Sulzberger Intelligently first mentioned the requiem and Mozart mental state: Now Mozart had to write, which he did, often with tears in his eyes, always saying l am writing a Requiem for myself. Other accounts based on Constancys statements trot Cholesterols biography in 1793 state that the requiem was getting on his over-sensitive nerves On November 20, Mozart was forced to retire to his bed following the early symptoms of his fatal illness. Though he decreased physically, Mozart favor ethic did not, there was still an incomplete requiem to be finished. Mozart irked on the piece until his final hours. At pm on December 4 surrounded by Constance, her sister, and two friends (singers from his opera), Mozart sang the alto parts of the requiem with his friends and family singing the other voice parts. They sang through to the Lachrymose, where Mozart had stopped composing. The last thing did was to imitate the kettledrums in his Requiem. Due to illness, Mozart body had become completely swollen. After the doctor performed a regular bleeding in hopes of lessening the swelling. He provided a cold compress for Mozart. At the time of his death, Mozart was not living in penury. He had had serious financial difficulties from 1788 to 1790, but the last year of his life was exceptionally remunerative. He lived well, but not extravagantly, and despite some debts, his prospects for increasing wealth were excellent. Shortly after, Mozart lost consciousness and died at one in the morning December 5, 1791 at the young age of 35. Mozart was buried at SST. Marx Cemetery in Vienna and placed in an unmarked grave. Constance never attended the funeral nor visited the gravesite. Shortly after Mozart death, the people of Vienna began circulating rumors that Wallets was the mysterious person who commissioned the piece. After studying letters and records from 1 Musicologists believe that Mozart and Constance ever aware who their commissioner was and played along for the money _ Mozart was in debt and tried to accept as many offers as he could. In fact, evidence indicates that Michael Bugbear (Mozart dear friend) might have helped Mozart get the job. Bugbear lived in one of Walleyes buildings and worked in the building where Franz Anton Letting (the gray messenger and another friend Of Mozart) worked as administrator and marketing manager Of Walleyes factory. Mozart Notes Mozart is the primary composer of his Requiem. Of the finished score, Mozart completed the Introit and Keri as well as the Offertory. The two fugues Mozart developed in the Keri are original and Mozart expressed his intentions to S;smear to repeat this section at the close of the mass. Mozart also composed a majority of the first five movements of the sequence up to the eighth measure to the Lachrymose. In the Connotations, the majority to the vocal parts are pure Mozart, as is the orchestration at the beginning of the piece. At measure 26 the top notes of each chord in the orchestra are his, and the rest have been added. In the Lachrymose the orchestration in the first measures are his and the top toe in the chord from measures 3 through Bare his. .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .postImageUrl , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:hover , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:visited , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:active { border:0!important; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:active , .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue9a20406ff15320a567915576e1def6a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Alcohol Abuse EssayThe voice parts are also authentic through to measure eight, where Mozart stopped abruptly and moved into the Offertory. Mozart also composed most of the Domino Jesus and Hosting, After his death, Mozart left notes and sketches with his ideas for other parts of the Requiem. He also left directions for exactly Vichy instruments were to be included, but did not explain the notes each instrument would play, with the exception Of the strings Which were somewhat developed. Musicologists have studied the differences between Mozart and S;smarter techniques. Maunder explains that one can tell exactly Which notes and phrases are Mozart and which are S;smarter by examining the grammatical mistakes S;smear constantly makes. Nevertheless, Mozart is the primary composer; therefore a conductor should express the emotion Mozart was feeling while composing this piece. This feeling is gathered by examining what notes Mozart actually composed himself. While conducting this piece I will emphasize the vocal parts of the Confutation and the delicateness of the Lachrymose following Mozart directions, and taking into account S;smarter completion.

10 Interesting Facts About Radioactive Tritium

10 Interesting Facts About Radioactive Tritium Tritium is the radioactive isotope of the element hydrogen. It has many useful applications. Here are some interesting facts about tritium: Tritium is also known as hydrogen-3 and has an element symbol T or 3H.  The nucleus of a tritium atom is called a triton  and consists of three particles: one proton and two neutrons. The word tritium comes from  Greek the word tritos, which means third. The other two isotopes of hydrogen are protium (most common form) and deuterium.Tritium has an atomic number of 1, like other hydrogen isotopes, but it has a mass of about 3 (3.016).Tritium decays via beta particle emission, with a half-life of 12.3 years. The beta decay releases 18 keV of energy, where tritium decays into helium-3 and a beta particle. As the neutron changes into a proton, the hydrogen changes into helium. This is an example of the natural transmutation of one element into another.Ernest Rutherford was the first person to produce tritium. Rutherford,  Mark Oliphant, and Paul Harteck prepared tritium from deuterium in 1934 but were unable to isolate it.  Luis Alvarez and Robert Cornog realized tritium was ra dioactive and successfully isolated the element. Trace amounts of tritium occur naturally on Earth when cosmic rays interact with the atmosphere. Most tritium that is available is made via neutron activation of lithium-6 in a nuclear reactor. Tritium is also produced by nuclear fission of uranium-235, uranium-233, and polonium-239. In the United States, tritium is produced at a nuclear facility in Savannah, Georgia. At the time of a report issued in 1996, only 225 kilograms of tritium had been produced in the United States.Tritium can exist as an odorless and colorless gas, like ordinary hydrogen, but the element is mainly found in liquid form as part of tritiated water or T2O, a form of heavy water.A tritium atom has the same 1 net electrical charge as any other hydrogen atom, but tritium behaves differently from the other isotopes in chemical reactions because the neutrons produce a stronger attractive nuclear force when another atom is brought close. Consequently, tritium is better able to fuse with lighter atoms to form heavier ones. External exposure to tritium gas or tritiated water is not very dangerous because tritium emits such a low energy beta particle that the radiation cannot penetrate the skin. However, tritium does pose some health risks if it is ingested, inhaled, or enters the body through an open wound or injection. The biological half-life ranges from around 7 to 14 days, so bioaccumulation of tritium is not a significant concern. Because beta particles are a form of ionizing radiation, the expected health effect from internal exposure to tritium would be an elevated risk of developing cancer.Tritium has many uses, including self-powered lighting, as a component in nuclear weapons, as a radioactive label in chemistry lab work, as a tracer for biological and environmental studies, and for controlled nuclear fusion.High levels of tritium were released into the environment from nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s. Prior to the tests, it is estimated only 3 to 4 kilograms of tritium was pres ent on the Earths surface. After testing, the levels rose 200-300%. Much of this tritium combined with oxygen to form tritiated water. One interesting consequence is that the tritiated water could be traced and used as a tool to monitor the hydrologic cycle and to map ocean currents. Initiative 200 essays

Initiative 200 essays Affirmative Action Under Attack by Initiative 200? Affirmative action is under heavy attack by initiative 200, and it should not be. It should not be under fire because it serves as an act of restitution for the discrimination and hurt that we have caused African-Americans and other minorities throughout this century. It is our job to repair and repay blacks because our performance in the past has immediately affected their present status. Americans, especially white males until late, were not opposed to affirmative action. This is only because affirmative action primarily benefited white males. It was the privileges our colonial fathers established on the basis of race and gender that allowed white males to dominate the job market with little or no contention. Some even believe that affirmative action is preferential treatment for white males. White males have used race consistently in two ways since the Civil War: for the purpose of inclusion and exclusion. They have used race inclusively to benefit themselves and exclusively to deny opportunity to others. In the past, white males were preferred. In the present, however, affirmative action, though still based on race and gender, is used to include those who in the past were excluded. In more precise terms, with todays affirmative action, or preferential treatment, we are attempting to adjust for the imbalances of the past that have been carried on into the present. All of this seems so intuitively obvious, so why then cant most Americans understand why affirmative action is obligatory? I believe the answer is as follows: Americans have refuse to recognize that there is and empirical relationship between the past and the present. They refuse to recognize that understanding the effects of past discrimination on the present is the key to explaining why affirmative action is not only needed in the present, but is the moral and political responsi...

Causes of the Economic Recession Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Causes of the Economic Recession - Essay Example Economic Recession has adverse effects on the economies and they include such aspects as unemployment which can hurt the economy of a country. Economic recession is also responsible for the lower standard of living for various people around the world (Siegel, 2002). There are various causes of an economic recession in a country's economic or rather in the world economy. This can be attributed to various effects which may vary from one country or region to another. There have been identified a number of causes for economic recession and this include financial crisis, energy crisis, war, under consumption, over production, currency crisis and increased fuel prices (Bulow, 1985). This is a situation in which various financial institutions or financial assets loose their value greatly and at a very sudden way. The situation can be expressed under many circumstances and it has been documented in historical perspective. One of the major causes of financial crisis in from the 19th century to the modern day world is the aspect of banking panics which have been associated with many recessions in the world. Financial crisis is also characterized by the crashing of stock markets all over the world, sovereign defaults, currency crisis and the financial bubbles bursting (Markus, 2008). There have been recorded a number of financial crisis in the world and the most notable is the Asian Financial Crisis of the year 1997 which was responsible for economic recession in Asia and the far reaching effects were felt all over the world. The most notable of the financial crisis was the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and 2009 which sparked off in the United States of America and spread to major European economies and consequently its effects were felt all over the world with the third world countries being adversely affected (Charles, 2005). Prior to the economic recession of 2008 and 2009 various financial institution collapsed and this led to the closure of many corporations in the world. The majority of these corporations were in the world leading economies notably the countries of United States such as American Insurance Group and corporations from Europe. These countries are the leading world economies and with this economies being affected by financial crisis, the world consequently was affected by economic recession (Siegel, 2002). 1.1.2 Currency Crisis A currency crisis is also referred to as a balance of payment crisis and it happens when the currency of a country either appreciates or depreciates suddenly. This change of the value of a currency undermines its qualification as a medium of exchange or also as a store of value. It is a character of a financial crisis and it is incorporated into one of the association of the real economic
